The Celebration of Lights is an initiative run by the City of Dawson to celebrate the holiday season by beautifying the town and hosting small Christmas-related events to help offer opportunities to the public to recreate.
This year's Celebration of Lights features the Community Christmas Lights Contest, the 12 Days of Christmas Scavenger Hunt, and the Gingerbread House Building Contest. See details on all the events below.
Community Christmas Lights Contest
Decorate your home, organization or business for the holiday season, and help make Dawson shine this December.
Between December 1 and 18, the public is invited to nominate and judge the best lights in Dawson. The ballot to enter is included below.
There are 3 categories in this contest:
- Best In-town residential
- Best Out-of-town residential
- Best Organization/Business
Nominations are performed by the public on their ballots. Feel free to campaign to improve your chances. May the best lights win!

Ballots must be submitted by 11:59pm on Sunday, December 18, 2022. Winners to be announced December 19th. Ballot boxes are located at the Recreation office (1085 Front Street, above the fitness centre) or at the AMFRC Arena. Ballots can also be submitted by email to: recreation@cityofdawson.ca
The 12 Days of Christmas Scavenger Hunt
The Recreation Department is working together with our various partners in Dawson to hide 12 numbered light ornaments, in the theme of the 12 Days of Christmas, throughout Dawson City. Community members are invited to hike, bike, ski, snowshoe or drive and find them all.
Fill out your ballot and submit it in-person in our ballot boxes located at the Waterfront Building or The Art and Margaret Fry Recreation Centre. Alternatively, you can email your submission to recreation@cityofdawson.ca. Ballots are available at the Recreation Office (1085 Front street, above the fitness centre) the Art and Margaret Fry Recreation Centre, and are also available below.

Gingerbread House Competition
Get out your icing! Build and decorate a gingerbread house for your chance to win! Bring your creations to the arena on December 10th or 11th and they will be displayed and voted on. Voting closes on Sunday, December 18th and winners will be announced on December 19th. There will be several prize categories, bonus points for Klondike themed creations! Happy Decorating!
