History The recreation centre is named in honour of longtime community members Art and Margaret Fry. Art Fry's journey to Dawson City began in 1928 at the age of sixteen when he arrived from Vancouver with dreams of pursuing a career in professional boxing. Although he returned briefly to Vancouver in 1928, he found himself drawn back to the Yukon during the summer of 1929. It was during this time that he founded the Yukon Amateur Boxing Club, showcasing his passion for the sport and his dedication to fostering a sense of community through recreational activities. In 1930, Art diversified his pursuits and ventured into mining, a venture that would define the rest of his life. This success in mining not only provided the Fry family with a livelihood but also became a source of support for recreational initiatives in Dawson City. Concession Stand Every season, a local business brings their unique cooking style to the Arena Concession. This year, we are excited to host Grumpy Schnitzel for the winter season. Opening is planned for November 8 2024. Drop-in Skate Details Parent / Tot Skate: Formerly Stroller Skate. For kids 5 and under accompanied by a guardian on skates. An opportunity to introduce your child to skating. Strollers, Sticks and Skate Aids allowed on ice. Pucks not allowed. Select skates available and included in drop-in fee. 9-10am Tuesday & Thursday Child's Hockey Skate: For kids 8 and under accompanied by a guardian on skates. An opportunity for children to develop hockey skills. Please note that sticks and pucks WILL BE permitted on the ice surface.
