Grants & Groups

The City of Dawson awards grants to individuals, small groups, community groups and organizations in the pursuit of recreational and leisure activities with funding provided by the Community Lottery Program and as outlined in the Recreation Grants Policy.

Activities related to heritage & culture, amateur level performing, visual & literary arts, amateur sport and other forms of leisure activity are eligible for funding. Funding will only be provided for eligible expenses and will not be provided for any program or event that limits participation based on culture, religion, or ethnic background.

Apply for a Recreation Grant

There are two levels of funding available under the Recreation Grants Program. Level 1 recreation grants are intended for individuals or small groups.  Level 2 recreation grants are intended for community based groups, organizations, associations, non-profits, teams and leagues.

Level 1 Recreation Grants: 

  • Funding is available to any person residing in the Dawson City area that utilizes the Dawson Medical Facilities. 
  • Individuals attending the same event, program, practice, camp, etc., must submit one application.
  • Applicants are eligible for a maximum of $500 per calendar year. At the discretion of the board and subject to available funds, additional requests or requests exceeding this amount may be considered and require a detailed application demonstrating need, planned cost saving measures, letters of support/reference, information on fundraising efforts and additional funding sources.
  • Applications may include projects or events 30 days prior to the application deadline through the end of the calendar year.
  • Intakes for Level 1 Recreation Grant applications take place monthly. Deadline for applications is 4:00 p.m. on the last Thursday of each month. 
  • A completed Recreation Grant Application (see below for form) can be submitted to Parks & Recreation Department, City of Dawson

  • The Recreation Board will review applications at the first scheduled meeting of each month and make recommendations to council for approval.
  • Payment of grant is subject to the City receiving the Grant Reporting form along with proof of expenditures within thirty days of the event conclusion or date on letter of approval.  

Level 2 Recreation Grants:   

  • Funding is available for community based groups, organizations, associations, non-profits, teams and leagues. 
  • Level 2 funding shall be through the Community Grants process.
  • Projects or events must not have occurred prior to the application deadline. 
  • Applicants may submit only one application per year, which may include multiple projects or events. At the discretion of the Board additional applications within a calendar year may be considered.
  • Intake deadlines for Community Grant applications are: January 15th, May 15th and September 15th.  If application deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, submissions are due the following business day.

  • The Community Grants Committee will meet within two weeks of deadlines and make recommendations for approval at next Council meeting. 
  • Payment of grant is subject to the City receiving the signed Contribution Agreement along with the summary report, receipts and Revenue/Expense summary within six months of the date of notification of approved funding.

General Guidelines

  • Applicants that have been approved for funding will not be considered for any future grants until a final funding report and all supporting documents have been received by the City.
  • Applicants are required to recognize the Community Lottery Program and the City of Dawson as funders in all publicity associated with an approved event, program or project.
  • One cheque will be issued for all approved expenditures. Cheques may take 3-4 weeks to process once the claim has been submitted.
  • Funding requests will be evaluated in accordance with evaluation criteria and policy to determine the final funding allotment.
